Everything you need to know before the box arrives
A Norviel kit is a quiet weekend with a scalpel-free blade, some glue and a set of instructions that assume you've never done this before. Here's exactly what's involved.
Three levels, honestly labelled
Every product page states its level, piece count, build hours and assembled size. We'd rather you pick the wrong shelf than the wrong kit.
Beginner
- Large single-piece panels, forgiving tab-and-slot joints
- Wiring runs are pre-stripped and colour-coded
- One room, one light circuit
- Great first kit or gift for a teenager
Intermediate
- Loose furniture, crockery and books to place by hand
- Two or three lighting zones off one battery box
- Some fine work: shelves, railings, signage
- Our most popular difficulty — best value per evening
Advanced
- Multi-room interiors and real working hinges
- Layered depth: foreground, mid-ground, back wall
- Hundreds of tiny props — this is the slow one
- Rewarding, but plan two weekends, not one
What arrives

The four stages
Roughly 20% of the time is structure, 30% is wiring and 50% is fiddling with tiny books. That last 50% is the fun part.
- Sheet check & sort 15 minPop out the panels, lay them in sheet order and count against the check sheet.
- Build the shell 1–3 hAssemble the frame and floors. Dry-fit first, glue second — panels only go in one way.
- Light it 30–60 minThread the LED runs before you close the walls. Test the switch before you glue anything down.
- Dress the scene 2–5 hBooks, plants, signage, the cat. Tweezers help. So does a podcast.
Mistakes to avoid
Questions we get weekly
Do I need any tools?
No. Everything except 2 × AAA batteries is in the box. A pair of tweezers and a small craft knife make the fine work easier, and if you have them, use them — but a completed kit is possible with nothing but your hands.
How long does it really take?
The build time on each product page is the honest median across our builders, not the record. Add roughly 50% if it's your first kit, and subtract about 20% if you've done two or more.
Can I paint or customise it?
Yes, and people do. The wood takes acrylic well. Paint before assembly, and seal the printed panels first if you want to keep the original graphics crisp.
Is it suitable for children?
The recommended age is 14+ on every kit, driven by the small parts and the glue. That said, plenty of families build them together with an adult handling the assembly and a child on props.
What if a piece is missing or snapped?
Message us with the sheet and panel number. Replacement panels ship free within the 2-year support window — usually inside a week, worldwide.
Does the lid come off? Can I move it?
Kits with a dust cover have a removable acrylic lid. Once built, the scene is stable enough to reposition on a shelf, but carry it with both hands, not by the roof.
